A new butcher's counter has opened in the food hall at Squire's, Heathlands Road. Alanah Wyatt, 4th generation of the Porky Whites family, took over after JL Butchers closed.
Wokingham has a new butcher. A&G Whites Butchers opened its counter in the food hall at Squire’s Garden Centre on Heathlands Road on Tuesday 15 September. It held an official opening day on Saturday 19 September (Porky Whites, 1 September 2026).
The business belongs to Alanah Wyatt. It is her first shop. She is the fourth generation of the White family to become a butcher. Harry and Jim White started what became Porky Whites, and the family dates its butchery to 1935. Her mother, Francesca Wyatt, is managing director of Porky Whites.
Squire’s now lists the counter on its Wokingham page. It describes A&G Whites as a female-owned business led by the founder’s great-granddaughter (Squire’s Garden Centres, Wokingham).
What the counter sells
The launch announcement lists:
- loose meat, cut to order
- hand-trimmed bespoke butchery
- pre-packed meat
- the Porky Whites retail range
Why the counter changed hands
The food hall had a butcher before. JL Butchers moved into the Squire’s food hall on 1 November 2021, having started in West Byfleet in 2013. Its website announced it was closing and gave its final day as 13 August 2026 (JL Butchers). A&G Whites has taken over the same concession, so the food hall was without a butcher for about a month.
The move grew out of an existing deal. Porky Whites already supplies sausages and formed meats to the cafĂ© bar restaurants at all 17 Squire’s garden centres, according to the launch announcement.
In her words
Alanah Wyatt dedicated the opening to her late grandfather, Graham White. “I want to dedicate this to my grandfather, whose love for the trade continues to inspire me and my family every day,” she said.
She is completing a Level 2 butchery apprenticeship with Plumpton College, where she received the college’s Values Award. Her mother said: “From the moment Alanah decided that she wanted to be a butcher, I knew sooner or later she would own her own butchery business.”
