The direct train to Waterloo

From Paddington the Elizabeth line carries on across town, which is what settles the choice for most destinations: Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf are all one Crossrail ride from the Reading platforms. The pattern to remember: the cheap tickets are routed “via Staines”, which means the direct SWR train. Going via Reading on the fast line needs the dearer “any permitted” fare, roughly £7 to £23 more depending on the ticket. If you want the fast route both ways regularly, that premium adds up; if you only need speed one way, a via-Staines return plus patience often wins.
