Wokingham Winter Carnival: Sunday 29 November, 10.30am

Wokingham Winter Carnival is on Sunday 29 November 2026, from 10.30am to 5.30pm, with the town centre closed to traffic all day. Wokingham Lions Club, which runs it, has the date and the times on its own site, and lists it on its events calendar (Wokingham Lions, events).

It is free to enter. The Lions describe it as “a FUN day out for the whole family” with street entertainers, music, singing, dancing, a funfair with “loads of different rides”, food and drink stalls and gift stalls, and they say the town is closed to traffic “so children can join in the fun in a totally safe environment”.

One thing is already settled for anyone hoping to trade: stall places are gone. “Places for stallholders at the 2026 event are now full”, the Lions say, though they are running a waiting list for drop-outs. Last year 150 stalls booked and the event was declared sold out (Wokingham.Today, 26 November 2025).

The running order

No 2026 programme has been published. This is the timetable the Lions printed in their official 2025 programme, which is the best guide to how the day is shaped (Wokingham Winter Carnival 2025 programme, PDF):

The 2023 timetable was tighter at the same end of the day: countdown at 4.10pm, St Sebastian’s brass band and the Wokingham Singers at 4.15pm, community carols at 4.45pm, laser show at 5pm and rides closing at 5.30pm, with 120 stalls booked and the switch-on done by the Town Mayor and Mini Mayor (Wokingham.Today, 26 November 2023). So the finale has moved around by fifteen or twenty minutes from year to year. Get there by four.

Note the discrepancy if you have read it elsewhere: press coverage last year said the day “will culminate at 4:30pm in the switching on of the Wokingham Christmas Lights”, while the Lions’ own printed programme puts the countdown at 4.15pm and the carols at 4.35pm. The programme is the first-party document, so that is what we have used, and it carries its own warning that “the timetable may be subject to last-minute changes due to factors outside our control”.

There is more than one stage. In 2025 Peach Place ran its own bill of morris sides, acapella and a bubble fairy from 10.35am, Denmark Street ran a third programme from 11.15am, and jugglers and stilt walkers roved the whole event all day.

Which streets it takes over

The carnival is not confined to the Market Place. In 2025 it ran through Denmark Street, Market Place, Peach Street, Broad Street, Rose Street and Peach Place, and extended onto the hardstanding next to Elms Field.

The closures are already made. Since 30 September 2025 the borough’s recurring events have run under one standing order, the (Various Roads, Wokingham Borough) (Public Events Traffic Regulation) Order 2025, which replaced the 2014 version, so there is no new order each November (Wokingham Borough Council, draft order, PDF).

The Winter Carnival appears in both of its schedules, Schedule I for no waiting and Schedule II for no driving, covering the same roads:

• A329 Market Place, entire length
• A321 Market Place, entire length
• A329 Broad Street, entire length
• A321 Denmark Street, between A321 Market Place and the entrance to the Denmark Street car park
• Rose Street, between A329 Broad Street and the entrance to the Rose Street car park
• A329 Peach Street, “between its junctions with Easthampstead Road and A329 Peach Street”

That last line is the council’s own wording, in both schedules, and it is circular: Peach Street is described as running between Easthampstead Road and itself. In practice Peach Street closes, as the council’s news notices have confirmed each year.

The order sets no hours. Article 2 applies the restrictions “during the holding of the respective occasions” and only while the statutory signs are displayed. The council’s news notice for the 2025 carnival closed Peach Street, Denmark Street and Broad Street throughout the day, with Rose Street shut at the Broad Street junction only (Wokingham Borough Council, 6 November 2025).

Parking is not free, and has not been since 2024

This is the detail that catches people out. The council used to suspend charges in six town centre car parks for the carnival: Rose Street, Easthampstead Road East and West, Cockpit Path, Denmark Street, the Carnival multi-storey and Shute End.

In 2023 the council went further and waived charges outright: “Payment machines will still be active, but temporary signs will be out, so no-one needs to buy a ticket.”

It stopped. In October 2025 the council signalled there would be no free parking for the Winter Carnival, the Woodley Christmas Extravaganza or the run-up to Christmas. Cllr Mark Ashwell, executive member for business development, said he would prefer the money went to retailers in other ways: “These events themselves will bring people into Wokingham and Woodley, and our retailers will be able to profit from the increase in footfall.” The cost of free parking was put at around £15,000 per event (Wokingham.Today, 9 October 2025).

So assume you pay. Every council car park in the borough charges on Sundays, at £1.60 an hour and £8 all day in the town centre since 1 July 2026. Carnival multi-storey on Wellington Road has 529 spaces and 17 disabled bays, and is the obvious choice on a day when the streets around Market Place are shut.

The council’s substitute has been free buses. In 2025 it made single fares free on all local journeys starting in the borough on carnival Sunday, 30 November, and on the weekends of 6/7, 13/14 and 20/21 December (Wokingham.Today, 14 November 2025). Nothing has been announced for 2026.

Santa, and booking ahead

Father Christmas is hosted by First Days Children’s Charity, at its School Days project in The Courtyard next to the Denmark Street car park. Book early if you want a slot: in 2025 “tickets to visit Father Christmas sold out very quickly”.

The grotto moves. In 2023 it was at the Elevate Centre, again with First Days helping and a booking system “to reduce queues”, and a small charge applied. No 2026 location or booking date has been published.

Is it definitely on? The 2024 warning

The carnival has been cancelled at short notice once in recent memory. On 23 November 2024, the day before the event, the Lions called off the 2024 carnival because of the forecast. A spokesperson said: “Safety is always our number one concern, and with the forecast showing wind gusts in excess of 50 mph, it just wouldn’t be safe.” It was not rearranged (Wokingham.Today, 23 November 2024).

It ran normally in 2025, and the Lions have the 2026 date on their site with stalls already full, so it is very much planned. But if the last weekend of November brings a named storm, check the Lions’ page before you set off.

Two places that will not tell you it is happening

The town council’s own what’s-on site does not list it. Love Wokingham’s calendar runs out at 7 November 2026 and has no Winter Carnival entry at all, which is odd for the town’s biggest day and means the Lions’ page is the only listing that matters.

One address that does not work

Local coverage points people to wintercarnival.co.uk. That address fails over https with a TLS error, so most browsers will refuse it. Over plain http it redirects to the Lions’ own carnival page. The reliable address is wokinghamlions.org.uk/winter.

Getting there without a car

Wokingham station is a ten minute walk from Market Place, and our train times to London page covers the service. One caution from last year: on carnival Sunday 2025 the railway between Bracknell and Reading, including Wokingham, Winnersh, Winnersh Triangle and Earley, was closed all day for maintenance, with rail replacement buses. Check before you rely on the train.
