Beechwood Primary in Woodley, Requires Improvement in 2023, now meets the expected standard in all six Ofsted report card areas. Open mornings from 7 October.

Beechwood Primary School in Woodley has come out of its first inspection under Ofsted’s new report cards at the expected standard in every area. Safeguarding was judged as met (Ofsted report, inspection 23 June 2026).

It is a clear step up. At its previous inspection, in November 2023, the school was rated Requires Improvement overall (Ofsted report, November 2023). Ofsted published the new report on 9 September (Ofsted provider page).

The grades

Report cards replaced the single-word overall rating. Each area is graded on a five-point scale: exceptional, strong standard, expected standard, needs attention, or urgent improvement.

Area November 2023 June 2026
Overall Requires improvement No overall grade under the new system
Achievement / quality of education Requires improvement Expected standard
Attendance and behaviour Good (behaviour and attitudes) Expected standard
Personal development Good Expected standard
Leadership Requires improvement Expected standard
Early years Good Expected standard
Curriculum and teaching (part of quality of education) Expected standard
Inclusion Not graded separately Expected standard
Safeguarding Effective Met

The two frameworks do not line up exactly, so the columns are not a like-for-like comparison. What they do show is that the two areas that held the school back in 2023, education and leadership, are no longer below the bar.

What the inspectors found

Inspectors found a school where pupils “generally make good progress”. They said it was a “happy, nurturing and inclusive school”. Their main points:

  • The share of Year 6 pupils meeting the expected standard in reading, writing and maths has improved and is closer to the national average.
  • Published Key Stage 2 results “do not fairly or fully reflect” pupils’ achievement, because more pupils than usual join partway through the year, including children arriving from other countries.
  • Behaviour is “calm and well managed”, and bullying is rare.
  • Attendance is broadly average and improving, and persistent absence is falling.
  • Parents are “very positive” about the school.

The report sets three next steps:

  • improve older pupils’ handwriting, sentence construction and spelling
  • keep working on attendance, especially for disadvantaged pupils and those with special educational needs
  • make sure staff pick up errors and misconceptions quickly
