Wokingham Remembrance Sunday: 8 Nov, Silence at 11am

Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November 2026, and Wokingham marks it twice in the day: an 11am two-minute silence in the Market Place, then a parade at 2.35pm to a 3pm service at All Saints Church. Both are confirmed on Wokingham Town Council’s own event page, which is dated 08/11/2026 (Wokingham Town Council, Remembrance).

The morning silence is led by the town council. Its Honorary Bugler sounds the Last Post and the Reveille, and the council says residents “are welcome to observe this two-minute silence” without booking anything. The same act of remembrance is repeated on Wednesday 11 November for Armistice Day.

The times

One change is worth knowing if you have come in past years expecting a wreath laying at the memorial. The council says “the wreath laying part of our Remembrance activities is being included within the Church Service, to allow it to be more visible to all those attending on the day.” The service itself is public, but the council warns “there is limited capacity”, so the parade route is the reliable place to watch.

Organisations that want to march have to ask first. The council asks them to register with the Civic Officer in advance, on 0118 974 0882 or by email through the town council site. Individual residents do not need to register to watch.

Visiting the war memorial before the day

Wokingham’s war memorial is inside the Town Hall rather than out in the street, so it is not something you can walk up to at any hour. The town council opens it for quiet reflection from Monday 2 November to Friday 6 November, between 10am and 2pm. Go to the Information Centre or press the town council intercom and a member of staff will show you in. Visits outside those hours can be booked in advance on 0118 974 0882.

The council also lists wooden crosses and poppies at Waitrose, Tesco and its own Information Centre, which opens Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 2pm. That entry is flagged “(TBC)” on the council’s page, so treat the shops as likely rather than settled. Crosses can be placed at the memorial inside the Town Hall or on the stand outside in the Market Place.

Road closures, and why there will be no annual notice

Do not wait for a traffic order to appear this autumn. Wokingham’s Remembrance parade is covered by a standing order, the (Various Roads, Wokingham Borough) (Public Events Traffic Regulation) Order 2025, which came into operation on 30 September 2025 and replaced the 2014 version. We downloaded the borough’s own draft of the order and read the schedules. “Wokingham Remembrance Day Procession” is a named heading in both Schedule I (no waiting) and Schedule II (no driving), covering:

• A321 Market Place, between A329 Peach Street and A321 Denmark Street
• A329 Peach Street, between Cross Street and A329 Broad Street
• A329 Broad Street, for its entire length
• A329 Shute End, for its entire length
• A329 Reading Road, between A329 Shute End and Holt Lane
• A321 Station Road, for its entire length
• Rose Street, between A329 Broad Street and Cross Street
• Easthampstead Road, between A329 Peach Street and Wescott Road

No hours appear anywhere in the order. Article 2 makes the restrictions apply only “during the holding of the respective occasions” and only “at such times as signs required by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002 (and later versions) are lawfully displayed in the said roads”. In plain terms, the cones and signs going out are the closure, and the roads reopen when they come in.

For a sense of the window, the borough published the actual hours last year: 2pm to 4.30pm on Sunday 9 November 2025 for Rose Street, Peach Street and parts of Broad Street and Wiltshire Road (Wokingham Borough Council, November 2025). The 2026 parade steps off at 2.35pm, so expect something close to that.

Parking, honestly

Every borough car park charges on a Sunday, and the afternoon closure takes Rose Street in, which is one of the closest car parks to the Market Place. Arrive before 2pm or park away from the loop and walk in. Our parking page has the current tariffs and the five car parks that stay free.

The night before is busy too. Wokingham’s fireworks are on Saturday 7 November, with a torchlit procession through the same streets, so the town centre is disrupted on both days of that weekend. Remembrance elsewhere in the borough

The same standing order carries named closures for six more processions in the borough, which is the clearest evidence that these happen every year: Arborfield, Finchampstead, Sonning, Swallowfield, Twyford and Wargrave. The roads listed are:

• Arborfield: B3030 Eversley Road between School Road and B3349 Langley Common Road, School Road, Swallowfield Road, Reading Road and B3030 Sindlesham Road
• Finchampstead: B3348 Jubilee Road and B3448 The Village, both entire
• Sonning: B4446 Pearson Road and High Street, both entire
• Swallowfield: Church Road between The Street and Part Lane, The Street between Church Road and Curlys Way, and Swallowfield Street entire
• Twyford: Station Road, B3024 Ruscombe Lane and Ruscombe Road, A3032 London Road, Springfield Park, A321 Waltham Road and A321 Church Street
• Wargrave: Church Street entire, A321 High Street between Church Street and Station Road, and Station Road between High Street and Watermans Way

Times for those are not published yet for 2026. Last year the borough gave Wargrave a service at St Mary’s between 10.30am and 10.45am with the parade on the High Street, Shinfield assembling at the School Green War Memorial at 10.15am, and Arborfield assembling outside the Royal British Legion at 10am for a 10.40am march, with the roads around Arborfield Cross closed from 9am to noon.

Woodley is the exception in shape. Its town council lists Armistice Day on 11 November 2026 in its events calendar, a gathering at the war memorial at 11am where the council, schools and community groups lay wreaths (Woodley Town Council, events). Note that the detail page behind that listing still carries the date 11/11/2025, so the year on the calendar is newer than the year on the page. Wreaths can be ordered through the Royal British Legion, and Woodley asks for them before the end of the third week in October.
